An interfaith wedding needs two separate answers: which legal marriage route fits your circumstances, and which ceremony you both want. A civil marriage does not automatically make you eligible for a religious ceremony, and a beautiful celebration does not replace legal registration.

> General planning information, not legal advice. Official sources checked on 12 September 2026. Get case-specific confirmation from the responsible authority and religious institution.

Does mixed nationality mean mixed faith?

No. You may have different passports and the same faith, or the same nationality and different faiths. Tell the authority the actual circumstances of both partners. Community labels alone do not provide the information it needs.

Avoid starting with “Which package can we buy?” Start with “Which authority can assess our situation?”

Civil-marriage rules differ between emirates. ADJD’s published Abu Dhabi service is not restricted by religion or nationality, except for Muslim UAE citizens, and includes other eligibility conditions. This should not be read as an automatic approval for your case or a rule covering all UAE courts. Check the official ADJD service and our Abu Dhabi civil marriage guide.

For Dubai or Ras Al Khaimah, use the specific Dubai civil guide or RAK civil planning guide. If you want a Sharia marriage, take both partners’ circumstances to the relevant court or authorised marriage official; do not apply a civil-service checklist to that process.

Ask separately how the certificate will be accepted in any other country where you need to use it. Do not assume UAE registration answers that question.

What if a religious institution cannot conduct our ceremony?

Ask the institution directly before making a booking. Its religious requirements are separate from court eligibility.

Discuss what matters to each of you: a particular rite, family blessings, readings, music, clothing or a celebration with no religious ceremony. A symbolic ceremony can be part of your celebration plan, but it must not be presented as the legal marriage itself.

For a Gurudwara ceremony, use the Anand Karaj questions. If Nikah is part of your plan, use the Nikah planning guide.

Write a one-page plan together

QuestionYour shared answer
What will make the day meaningful?Choose the traditions you both genuinely want
What needs religious approval?Name the institution and who will ask it
What is legally confirmed?Record the authority and outstanding questions
How will guests follow the ceremony?Decide on languages, explanations and order of events
What should the venue know?Food, prayer, privacy, alcohol preferences and accessibility
What stays provisional?Mark unconfirmed dates and avoid non-refundable commitments

This is a planning tool, not an eligibility test. You do not have to share private family disagreements or sensitive records with a venue to explain your event preferences.

Compare a partner’s role with a planner’s role

A registration-support partner should explain its scope, qualifications, charges and responsibilities. The authority decides the application. Your celebration suppliers should explain the venue, food, décor, schedule and cancellation terms.

Ask who will tell you if an appointment changes and who will coordinate the knock-on effect on travel or the reception. Put the answer in your supplier and venue agreements.

Start with the questions, not a deposit

WeddingChamps can discuss your celebration and help explore appropriate specialist support where needed. We do not decide legal or religious eligibility, and a proposed partner must be identified and its service agreed before booking.

Share your wedding plans and outstanding questions. We can use that brief to discuss suitable next steps without asking for passports in an initial enquiry.
