Indian Marriage Registration in Dubai for Mixed-Nationality Couples
Wedding Planning · September 7, 2026
An Indian wedding in Dubai can involve three separate plans: the cultural or religious ceremony, legal marriage registration and recognition of the certificate in India or another country. Do not assume one ceremony completes all three.
> This is general planning information, not legal advice. Confirm your case with the court and the Consulate General of India in Dubai before arranging documents or relying on a ceremony date.
Begin with the legal route
Mixed-nationality does not automatically prevent a couple from marrying in the UAE. The correct route depends on both partners’ religions, nationalities, residence, previous marital status and intended place of registration.
Possible routes may include a UAE civil marriage for eligible non-Muslim couples, a Sharia marriage where applicable, or a consular or religious process. Each has its own authority and evidence. Use the UAE marriage route guide before collecting documents.
Indian consular route: what to check
The Consulate General of India states that its marriage solemnisation or registration services are under India’s Foreign Marriage Act and that at least one proposed partner must be an Indian citizen with a UAE residence visa for that consular route. Its current procedure also describes notices, witnesses and extra evidence for certain cases.
That is a rule for the Indian consular service, not a statement that every Indian citizen in the UAE must use it. Ask the Consulate:
- whether your nationalities and residence fit the service;
- whether the proposed marriage requires prior notice or publication;
- which original identity and residence documents are needed;
- which single-status or marital-status evidence is accepted;
- what additional documents apply to a foreign-national partner;
- whether either partner’s previous marriage changes the process; and
- how the final certificate should be used or registered elsewhere.
NOC for an Indian national marrying a foreign national
The Consulate publishes a specific NOC service for an Indian national marrying a foreign national in the UAE. Use its current checklist rather than a general internet template. Confirm the required affidavit wording, supporting documents, witnesses, appointments and validity directly with the Consulate.
An NOC is not a universal substitute for the receiving court’s marital-status requirements. Ask the court or institution exactly what it will accept.
Registering after a religious ceremony
The Consulate’s published solemnisation and registration procedure describes evidence for marriages performed at a church, Gurudwara or temple. This may include the religious marriage certificate alongside passports, UAE residence evidence, photographs, witnesses and other case-specific documents.
First confirm that the religious institution will perform the ceremony for your couple. Religious eligibility, legal registration and Indian consular eligibility are three separate checks.
A safe planning sequence
- Ask the proposed legal authority to confirm eligibility in writing.
- Obtain its exact document list for both nationalities.
- Ask the relevant religious institution separately about ceremony eligibility.
- Confirm any NOC, attestation and translation sequence before paying.
- Ask how the final certificate will be recognised in each connected country.
- Only then align the ceremony venue, guests and suppliers.
